Best BigCommerce countdown timer apps

A countdown timer is the cheapest conversion lever on an online store and the easiest one to get wrong. Done well, it gives a real deadline a visual home — a sale that genuinely ends Sunday, a cart that genuinely releases stock after 10 minutes. Done badly, it is a fake clock that resets on refresh, and shoppers notice. Everything below can run an honest timer; the difference is how much control you get over placement, scheduling and what happens when the clock hits zero.

How to choose

What actually separates these apps

Feature lists all look the same. These are the five things that change the outcome once the app is installed.

01 Placement control

Top bar only, or can you drop a timer inline on the product page, in the cart drawer, and on collection tiles? Inline product-page timers convert better than sitewide bars because they sit next to the buy button.

02 Honest expiry behaviour

Check what happens at zero: hide the timer, restart, or show a message. Apps that only offer an infinite loop per visitor are the ones that erode trust.

03 Scheduling & targeting

BFCM is the stress test. You want start/end datetimes in the store's timezone, plus targeting by product, collection, country and device.

04 Weight on the page

A timer is a few kilobytes of logic. If an app adds 100KB+ of JavaScript to every page for one bar, that is a tax on your Core Web Vitals.

One app on the BigCommerce App Marketplace clears our evidence bar in this category. The rest of the listings have too few reviews to rank honestly, so we have left them out rather than padding the page.

FAQ

Countdown timers on BigCommerce: common questions

Do countdown timers actually increase conversion rate?
They increase the conversion rate of shoppers who were already close to buying, by compressing the decision window. They do not create demand. The realistic effect on a well-targeted sale is a single-digit percentage lift, and it decays if you run a permanent 'sale ends tonight' banner that never ends.
Are fake countdown timers illegal?
No marketplace bans urgency widgets, but consumer-protection regulators in the EU, UK, US and Australia have taken action against retailers for countdowns tied to deadlines that did not exist. Tie every timer to a real sale end date and you avoid the entire category of risk.
Free or paid countdown timer app?
For one sitewide sale bar, the free tiers here are genuinely enough — GSC and Hoppy are free outright. You start paying when you need multiple simultaneous campaigns, product-level targeting, or removal of the app's branding.
Will a countdown timer slow my store down?
A single timer app adds roughly 15–60KB of JavaScript. That is measurable but rarely decisive. The damage comes from stacking five urgency apps that each load their own framework — pick one app that covers timers, badges and bars rather than three specialists.
